Read this first. Some of what follows works in the app today. Some of it is being built and is marked that way. We would rather tell you plainly which is which than let you go looking for a button that is not there yet.

1. Making the words bigger Works today

This is the first thing to do and almost nobody does it. If you are reading this page and squinting, use the A+ button at the top of this page right now. It remembers.

The app has the same control. Every screen in the app — the chart, the regulations, the hazard warnings, the disclaimers at the start — respects it. You set it once. You do not set it again.

The app also follows the text size you have set for the whole phone. If you want everything bigger, not just us: open the phone’s Settings, tap Accessibility, tap Display & Text Size, then Larger Text, and drag the slider. Come back to the app and it will have grown with you.

2. The first ten minutes Works today

  1. Open the app. Read the safety notice at the start. It is short and it is honest: this is a reference tool, not a replacement for official charts or your own judgment on the water.

  2. When the phone asks whether the app can use your location, say yes. Without it the chart cannot show you where you are, and distance, bearing, speed and time-to-arrival will not work. Your location stays on your phone.

  3. Pick your region. That is the stretch of water you fish. Everything — ramps, markers, hazards, springs, regulations — loads for that region.

  4. Tap a few pins while you are still sitting in the driveway with good signal. Get used to what a boat ramp pin looks like versus a charted hazard, before you need to know at twenty knots.

  5. Look at the regulations screen once. Find the fish you are after. Notice that it tells you the size, the bag limit and whether the season is open today, at your spot. That is the whole point — you should never be hunting through a website on the water.

3. Navigational maps on your phone before you lose service Works today

Out past the last tower your phone becomes a compass with a dead screen unless you have already pulled the region down. Do this at the house, on Wi-Fi, the night before.

Download the region while you have a good connection. Once it is on the phone, the chart, the pins, the hazards, the regulations and your saved spots all keep working with no bars at all. The app checks for updated regulations whenever it has signal and quietly falls back to the copy on your phone the moment it loses it. You always know the rules.

The honest limit. Nothing that has to reach another person — sending an invite, seeing another boat, chatting — can work without some kind of connection. Sections 7 and 8 are about exactly that problem.

4. Planning a trip and inviting your people Being built

  1. Open the trip planner and work down the drop-downs: the region, the ramp you are launching from, the date, and the time you want lines in the water.

  2. Add your fishing buddies. They get the meeting spot with its coordinates, a tap that opens driving directions, and the launch time.

  3. They answer one of three ways: driving myself, riding with you, or need a pickup — and if it is a pickup, where.

  4. Send the same plan to whoever is staying home. Now somebody on shore knows which water you are on, which ramp you left from, and when you said you would be back. That is an old habit among people who have been boating a long time, and it is a good one.

5. The catch album Being built

Take the picture with the camera inside the app rather than the phone’s own camera. When you do, the photo lands in your catch album already carrying everything you would otherwise have to remember: the coordinates and the nearest named water, the date and the time to the minute, and the species with the size and bag limit that applied at that spot on that day.

You confirm the species from a short list of what actually swims in that region. We are deliberately not letting the app decide for you from the photograph. A machine guessing wrong about which fish you are holding, with a legal size limit printed under it, is not a feature anybody needs.

6. Letting somebody see where you are Being built

Nothing here happens without a yes. The other person has to have the app, and they have to accept. Either of you can end it with one tap, and there is a marker on your screen the whole time you are visible so you are never being seen without knowing it.

The three kinds

Being findable by strangers at all is its own switch, and it is off until you turn it on. Leave it off and no one you have not already accepted can see you or send you anything.

Once two of you have accepted each other, you can chat. It is for the water: the fish moved, come around the point, we are heading in. There are no public rooms and no lobbies.

Say this plainly. This is a way for people who already know and trust each other to find each other. It is not a rescue service, it is not a distress beacon, and nobody at Delightful Florida Recreation is watching your boat. For an emergency you use VHF channel 16 and the Coast Guard, the same as you always have.

7. What happens when there’s no signal Not in v1

Your chart never needed a signal. But finding another boat means reaching another boat, and that needs some kind of link. There are three, and the app uses whichever one it can get.

Cell service — the easy one

Near town, near the ramp, close to shore. Everything works the way anything on a phone works. Then you run offshore and the bars go away.

Bluetooth — when the other boat is right there

Two phones can talk to each other directly, with no tower and no internet at all, if they are close. Realistically that means the other boat is within a few hundred feet — raft-up range, running-together range. Handy, and genuinely free. It will not reach across a bay, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

A radio mesh — when you want real distance

This is the one worth understanding, and it is the next section.

8. Off-grid radio, explained without the jargon Not in v1

Where this stands. Everything in sections 7 through 9 is researched and designed, and none of it is in the first release. The open-source radio software this would build on is published under a license we cannot combine with a paid, closed-source app without publishing our own source code, so nothing here is committed until that question is answered in writing by counsel. It is described here because it is where we intend to go, not because it is close. Sections 1 through 3 are what works today.

There is a technology called Meshtastic. It is free, open source, community built, and it solves the exact problem a boat has: talking to other people when there is no tower anywhere.

What it actually is

It is a small, cheap radio — about the size of a deck of cards, some of them smaller, most of them under a hundred dollars. It runs on a tiny battery for a long time because it is barely whispering. You connect your phone to it over Bluetooth, the same way you connect to a speaker or a headset. Your phone does the typing and the map. The radio does the distance.

Why it goes so much further than Bluetooth

It uses a radio method called LoRa, short for long range. The trick is that it sends very little information very slowly and very patiently, which lets a weak signal be pulled out of the noise from far away. You are not going to send photographs over it. Short messages and your position on a chart are exactly what it is good at.

In the United States it runs in the 902–928 MHz band, the same license-free band a cordless phone or a garage door opener lives in. You do not need an amateur radio license to use it — Meshtastic notes that LoRa is accessible in most regions without additional licenses or certifications, unlike ham radio. If you happen to hold a license there is a ham mode that unlocks more transmit power, but nobody needs it to get started.

The part that makes it a mesh

Here is the clever bit. Every radio in range of a message passes it along. So if you are too far from your buddy to reach him directly, but there is a third boat sitting between you, that third radio quietly relays it. Nobody has to do anything. There is no tower, no router, no company in the middle, and no account.

A message will be relayed three times by default, and up to seven — so a chain of boats or a radio left up on a tall antenna at the fish camp extends the whole group’s reach. The more people on the water carrying one, the better it works for everybody. That is the opposite of how most technology behaves.

How far, honestly

It depends entirely on what is between the two radios. Trees, buildings and the curve of the earth are what stop it, and open water has almost none of that, which is why boats do so well with it. A few miles between boats on open water is an ordinary result. The documented record is 331 kilometers — over 200 miles — between two mountaintops, which is not your Sunday on the flats but tells you what the physics allows. Add a relay radio on high ground and the whole group’s range grows.

Nodes — the radios that just sit there and listen

Not every radio in a mesh has to belong to somebody out fishing. A radio can simply be left running somewhere useful, doing nothing but hearing messages and passing them on. That is what people mean by a node.

Put one on the roof of a fish camp, on a marina piling, on a tower at the boat ramp, on top of a tall pine on somebody’s river property. Give it a small solar panel and it runs for years with nobody touching it — these radios draw so little power that a panel the size of a paperback keeps up. From up there it can hear boats that cannot hear each other, and it stitches them together.

This is where a mesh stops being two friends with radios and starts being coverage. A handful of well-placed nodes down a river system or along a stretch of coast means a boat at the mouth can reach a truck at the ramp twenty miles upriver, with every message hopping quietly from node to node. Nobody pays a carrier. Nobody signs up for anything. The nodes are just there, the way channel markers are just there.

We intend to help this along in the waters we cover — working with camps, marinas and landowners who are willing to host a node, and showing you on the chart which stretches of water are covered and which are not. A node someone else put up helps you, and yours helps them. It is the most old-fashioned thing about the whole technology.

Is anybody listening?

Messages are encrypted with AES256, with a separate key for each channel, and private messages between two people use public-key encryption so only the intended person can read them.

Two honest cautions. First, the radios ship with a publicly known default key — that default channel is effectively a party line, and anybody in range with a radio can read it. If you want your group private, you make your own channel with your own key and share it only with your people. Second, the outside of each packet — who sent it, where it is headed — is deliberately left unencrypted, so that other radios can relay a message they are not allowed to read.

Where our app fits

The intent is for the app to talk to one of these radios over Bluetooth so that your positions and your short messages ride the mesh and land on the same nautical chart you were already looking at. You would not be learning a new piece of software out on the water — it is the app you already use, with the tower removed from the equation. That work has not started, and it does not start until the licensing question above is settled.

Getting a message back to shore

A mesh on its own reaches other radios, and no further. The piece that makes it genuinely useful is a node that has its own internet connection — satellite service at a fish camp, or ordinary cell service at a ramp that still has bars. That node can hand mesh traffic onto the internet.

So a boat twenty miles out with no signal at all sends over the radio, the message hops boat to node to node until it reaches that one connected node, and from there it travels the ordinary way to a phone at home. The message moved from where there was no coverage to where there was. That is the whole idea, and it is achievable with parts you can buy today.

Two things we would hold ourselves to if we build it. Routing a message out through a gateway would always be your choice — per message or per channel, never automatic and never silent, because a gateway means your words leave the radio network and touch a server. And the coverage would be drawn honestly on the chart, gaps included. A map that shows coverage where there is none is worse than no map.

What it cannot do

One correction worth making plainly, because it is a common assumption: these radios cannot pick up a cell tower or a satellite and pass that along. Wrong frequencies, wrong modulation, and re-transmitting a carrier’s licensed spectrum is a regulated activity requiring certified equipment and carrier consent. The mesh does not extend cell coverage. It works where there is no cell coverage at all — it replaces the tower rather than stretching it.

Satellite messaging is separate hardware, not a mesh feature. Recent iPhone models have their own satellite messaging, but Apple reserves it for its own Messages and Emergency SOS — there is no public interface that would let this app send its own data that way. If that changes, we will say so then. Until it does, we promise nothing on it.

9. Setting up a radio, step by step Not in v1

This is the plain version. It is genuinely a one-evening job at the kitchen table, and once it is done you do not touch it again.

  1. Buy a radio. Get one that already has Meshtastic on it, an antenna, and a battery, so there is nothing to solder and nothing to flash. Get two if nobody you fish with has one yet — one radio talking to itself is a paperweight.

  2. Charge it and turn it on. Little screen, one or two buttons. That is the whole interface.

  3. Set the region to US. This is the one step you cannot skip. A radio with no region set will not transmit at all, on purpose — it is refusing to break somebody’s local radio law. Set it to US and it comes alive.

  4. Pair it to your phone over Bluetooth. Same as pairing a speaker. One phone per radio.

  5. Make your own channel and give it your own key. Skipping this leaves you on the default channel that everybody in the world can read. Making a channel takes about thirty seconds.

  6. Share that channel with your people. It shares as a QR code — they point their phone at your screen and they are in. That is your group.

  7. Test it in the yard. Walk to the end of the road and send a message. Then test it once on the water at a distance you actually fish, before the day you are counting on it.

  8. Mount it high. Radio waves care about height and clear line of sight more than anything else. On the T-top, on the console, up on the poling platform — not in the bottom of a cooler.

Two things worth knowing before you spend money. This is not the internet — no web pages, no photographs, no phone calls. Short messages and positions. And it only helps if the people you fish with have one too, which is why buying a pair is the sensible start.

10. When something isn’t working

The map is blank or my boat isn’t on it

Location permission is almost always the answer. Open the phone’s Settings, scroll to the app, tap Location, and set it to While Using the App. If you are indoors, GPS can take a minute to find itself — step outside.

The regulations look out of date

The app keeps a copy on the phone so it works offline, and refreshes that copy whenever it has signal. Open it once with service and it will catch up. The screen tells you when it last updated.

The text is still too small

Set it in the phone itself and every app grows, not just ours: SettingsAccessibilityDisplay & Text SizeLarger Text. Drag it as far as you like. We built our screens to survive the largest setting, and we test them there.

My radio won’t send anything

Nine times out of ten the region is unset. Set it to US. After that, check that both radios are on the same channel with the same key, and that the antenna is actually screwed on — transmitting without one can damage the radio.
